Exploring Alternative Methods for Error Attribution in Learning Curves Analysis in Intelligent Tutoring Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
It is becoming a standard technique to use learning curves as part of evaluation of intelligent tutoring systems [1,2,3], but such learning curves require a method for attributing errors. That is, the method must determine for each error a student makes what “knowledge component” in the student model is to blame. To this point, alternative methods for error attribution have not been systematically investigated. We implemented four alternative methods for error attribution – two temporal heuristics and two location-temporal heuristics. We employed two evaluation standards – a statistical standard for measuring model fit and parsimony and the Kappa technique for measuring inter-observer reliability. We looked to see which method better met the “learning-curve standard” that is, led to better prediction of students’ changes in error rate over time. Second, we asked if the codes generated by the methods better met the “human-match standard”, that is, were they like error attributions made by human coders. Both evaluation standards led to better results for the location-temporal heuristic methods than the temporal heuristic methods. Interestingly, we found that two of the methods proposed were better at error attribution, according to the learningcurve standard, than the original cognitive model of the intelligent tutoring system. Overall, these results suggest that the heuristics proposed and implemented in this paper can generally aid learning curve analysis and the perhaps, more generally, the design of student models

Analysis of Learning Curves for Weighted Constraint-based Tutoring Systems
Weighted constraints have been proven a useful means to enhance the quality of error diagnosis, e.g., in the domain of natural language parsing. In this paper, we propose an heuristic approach using constraint weights to analyze learning curves for weighted constraint-based tutoring systems as an addition (or alternative) to the commonly used analysis of pre-/post-test comparisons. Using a tuto...

متن کاملPeer-Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems: A Corpus-Oriented Approach
Our work takes as a starting point McCalla’s proposed ecological approach for the design of peer-based intelligent tutoring systems and proposes three distinct directions for research. The first is to develop an algorithm for selecting appropriate content (learning objects) to present to a student, based on previous learning experiences of likeminded students. The second is to build on this res...
متن کاملReachability checking in complex and concurrent software systems using intelligent search methods
Software system verification is an efficient technique for ensuring the correctness of a software product, especially in safety-critical systems in which a small bug may have disastrous consequences. The goal of software verification is to ensure that the product fulfills the requirements. Studies show that the cost of finding and fixing errors in design time is less than finding and fixing the...
متن کاملComparison of Machine Learning Methods for Intelligent Tutoring Systems
To implement real intelligence or adaptivity, the models for intelligent tutoring systems should be learnt from data. However, the educational data sets are so small that machine learning methods cannot be applied directly. In this paper, we tackle this problem, and give general outlines for creating accurate classifiers for educational data. We describe our experiment, where we were able to pr...
